Changing Rear Drum Breaks

The following steps describe how to change the rear drum breaks.

  1. With the car in 1st gear and the handbrake pulled, loose all the screws of each one of the four tires.
  2. Jack up the car and remove both tires.
  3. Lower the handbrake lever.
  4. Remove the two screws that hold the drum and then take it off.
Figure 1: the holes on the drum have the following purpose: 2 screws hold the drum to the hub; 4 through-holes allow the tyres to be tightened to the hub; 2 threaded holes can be used to extract the drum; 1 hole allows to inspect the wear of the break shoes.

Tip: change one break at a time to always have a reference during the assembly step.

Tip: If the drum doesn't come off easily, try with the help of an extractor.
